Within the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research, Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMK-IFU) concentrates on major regional and local environmental problems that are in the centre of public interest such as atmospheric pollution and climate change. The work program comprises studies of the interactions between biosphere and atmosphere, vegetation dynamics and forest growth patterns, and the associated carbon sequestration, and exchange of environmentally relevant trace substances, including in response to disturbance. Information is used for the development of processoriented dynamic vegetation models for the simulation of biosphere-atmosphere exchange, biogeochemical cycles and other ecosystem services, for the derivation of efficient mitigation and/or adaptation measures.
